The gold-standard exam for anal dysplasia in Seattle, Washington

High-Resolution
Anoscopy

High-resolution anoscopy, or HRA, uses magnification and enhanced visualization to examine the anal canal for precancerous changes that are invisible to the naked eye. It's the same protocol used in the national ANCHOR Study.

Who needs HRA

  • Patients with high-risk HPV
  • Patients with an abnormal anal Pap test
  • HIV-positive individuals or men who have sex with men
  • Patients with a history of cervical, vulvar, or vaginal dysplasia
  • Patients with recurrent anal warts or persistent lesions
  • Immunosuppressed patients

HRA is often the next step after a screening test flags a risk factor, and it's also used to monitor patients already being treated for dysplasia.

What it actually feels like

  • The area is numbed with topical and local anesthesia before anything begins.
  • Nitrous oxide is available if you want additional comfort during the procedure itself.
  • Most patients describe pressure rather than pain, with manageable soreness for a day or two afterward.
  • No sedation is used, so you will never need a driver.

What the exam involves

  • Magnified visualization of the anal canal
  • Application of a solution that highlights abnormal tissue
  • Targeted biopsy of any concerning areas
  • Treatment of abnormal tissue in the same visit, when appropriate

HRA does more than diagnose. Many patients leave the same visit having had abnormal tissue treated, not just identified.

Your visit

  • Performed in the office, no operating room needed
  • Takes 20 to 30 minutes in most cases
  • No sedation required
  • A clear explanation of findings before you leave

HRA can feel unfamiliar going in, but the exam itself is brief, and every step is explained as it happens.

What it costs

HRA is a medically necessary diagnostic procedure and often covered by insurance, depending upon your plan. Our billing team reviews your benefits and gives you pricing before your visit.
